Canadian privacy laws are much more protective than those in the US.
Before Canadian police can issue a public warning about a sex offender, he either has to fit the criteria of a high risk offender, or that of an 810.1 (sexual) or 810.2 (physical harm) restraining order. In short, these court applications are made based on law enforcements reasonable and probably grounds to believe that the individual is a risk to the community based on his past behavior.
They will show you his picture on TV, maybe post it on page 12 of the newspaper, tell you that he is out and about in your city, but forget about finding out if they live next door. In Canada, you don’t have a right to know that because the sexual deviant offender has a right to privacy!
Here's my question to you:
Should sex offenders have a right to privacy? Should "they" be protected from "us"?

My first rection to this was "Yes, I want to know where this sex offender is living", but after some thinking I have decided that there are Human Rights issues here. There are many reasons why someone would hurt a child. Most of those reasons are due to mental health issues. Im not saying that what they did is exusable, but I am saying that there are many issues that will arise once you talk to a sex offender. Most have had very trouble childhoods, many have been abused as children and have never had someone to talk to that could help them heal. Some have mental helath issues that go unoticed for years resulting in this behavior. So this is where I think our real problem is...Sex offenders are caught, sent to jail or are given such a light sentence that they are free to offend again. I would like to know if these Sex Offenders are reciveing help. Are they being provided therapy, are they recieving help at all? If they are such high risk offenders, then why are they being released into our communities? I have a hard time understanding why the Law would lable someone a High Risk offender, then release that person back into our communities?
It's like the Law is playing a joke on us all. They tell us Here is a High Risk Offender, here is a picture of what he/she looks like. We wont tell you where he/she lives, but we will release them into your community as a free person, so keep your eyes open and your kids inside beacuse we wont keep this High Risk offender in jail, but we will help support sexual assult centres so that your and your child will have someone to talk to when this offender attacks you child.
